Sustainable Shoes Philosophical Essay

More and more people are choosing sustainable and ethical fashion, instead of clothing made from synthetic fabrics and cheap fast fashion products.

But how big are the impacts of our purchasing decisions really?
Don't worry, this will not be an article discussing the CO2 consumption of a cheap T-shirt or the water usage of jeans. We prefer to focus on something positive.

This post is about an aspect that I haven't read anywhere before regarding sustainable clothing: the influence of sustainable clothing on our personality and behavior.

"Clothes make the man" is a saying with a lot of truth in it, and I'd like to philosophize a little about it here (a worthwhile 3-minute read).

When we put on a fancy suit or an evening dress, we do so to create a certain impression on the viewer. We want to look chic, of course. But at the same time, our manners and behavior also adapt to the clothing.

Through our clothes, we slip into different roles in everyday life, which are also associated with different behaviors. For many, it's difficult to relax in their "work clothes," and they have to change into their sweatpants and WoolFit slippers after work to unwind.

Conversely, many people also find it difficult to work productively in their comfort clothes. For the home office, therefore, "work-comfort clothes" are recommended, which also allow for an external switch between work mode and comfort mode (my tip would, of course, be the Taiga Home Office Slipper).

How does sustainable clothing change our behavior?

Probably quite similarly! Just as it's easier for us to show our best behavior in a suit, it's also easier for us to act sustainably in sustainable clothing.

As humans, we strive for coherence in our thoughts, actions, and outward appearance. Why should we buy sustainable clothing if we otherwise live unsustainably and produce massive amounts of plastic waste?

Sustainable clothing is a personal commitment to also act sustainably.

Fair and sustainable garments are our little everyday reminders that recall our values when we wear them and help us make more sustainable decisions.

Thus, even a small purchasing decision can have a big impact that goes beyond reduced resource consumption or fairer production conditions. Fair clothing is therefore also great as a gift for someone you might want to introduce to a more sustainable lifestyle.
